Thanks much, Kathy, for the kind words. As you well know, it helps to have a natural place like this one to help launch the words and thoughts and feelings. It’s as if we are doing our best to fit semantics to the real magic of the place itself. To do any less would seem terribly unfair.

(As for the Needle Palms: They don’t grow up on the relic shard of The Ridge, but down in the adjacent swamp where they seem to thrive.)

Here’s to the joys of long ties to the wild places in our own backyards and our spirits, and to those friends who tromp out with us to find these treasures.
And, to those who write about them with such unhurried, keen observations.
As a resident much farther north, I was also surprised to learn of needle palms in Lake Wales Ridge.

Thanks much for your input. As you may know, “Papa” also spent a lot of time fishing in the “great blue river” when living in Cuba, near Cojimar, so am figuring he knew which way the water flowed, and what it carried with it !

Also, excellent point about the loss of physical theme parks vs. our natural systems here in Florida. Would love to see that on an “entrance exam” before folks cross the border, as tourists or otherwise.

I’ve read a fair bit of Hemingway’s life through biographies and such. And I’d like to believe he would be on the side of the conservationists with as much as he spent in the wild, whether in Florida or Idaho.

And you’re dead on about the upstream junk flowing downstream. You can rebuild Disney if it falls apart, but once the reefs, rivers, and lakes have disappeared they are gone forever.

I am developing interpretive signs for Goose Spit Park, a park along a sandy spit close to Comox in British Columbia, Canada. We have a lot of sand dollars off the shores of the park and I did a short write-up of sand dollars for the interpretive sign.

I am looking for a good photo of sand dollars and was wondering if you have the one posted on your website in high resolution and if I could get permission to use it on our signs.

I appreciate your comments on PM, Sean. Not sure if his fiction has been undervalued—after all ‘At Play in the Fields etc’ was a NBA fiction finalist a while ago. I figure the guy challenges his readers; certainly, he can get away with telling a good story with a lot less effort. With all the formula stuff being passed off as serious writing these days, I really admire the guy for that a great deal. I also appreciate that Ed W. has a vague but working relationship with the real life Henry Flagler. Two socio-paths, except one who insulated himself with his wealth.
